Maintaining Your Air Conditioner

Replace or regularly cleaning your air conditioner’s filters is the most crucial maintenance operation you can perform to guarantee its efficiency. The amount of airflow is decreased and a system’s efficiency is considerably decreased by clogged, dirty filters. In addition, if the airflow is restricted, dirt might enter the evaporator coil without going through the filter, reducing the coil’s ability to absorb heat. Your air conditioner’s energy usage can be reduced by 5% to 15% by swapping out a clogged, dirty filter with a clean one.

Filters are often placed anywhere along the return duct’s length for central air conditioners. Filters are frequently found in ceilings, walls, or the air conditioner itself. A filter is fixed to the grill of a room air conditioner that faces the interior of the space.

Some filter types can be reused, while others need to be changed. They come in many different varieties and efficiency. Every month or two throughout the cooling season, clean or replace the filter(s) in your air conditioning system. If the air conditioner is used frequently, is exposed to dusty circumstances, or you have furry pets in the house, filters may require more frequent care.

Coils for air conditioners

Over the course of their months and years of use, the evaporator coil and condenser coil of the air conditioner accumulate dirt. The evaporator coil doesn’t get dirty as quickly with a clean filter. The evaporator coil will eventually continue to gather dirt, though. The coil is insulated by the soil, which lessens the coil’s capacity to absorb heat. Check and clean your evaporator coil as needed once a year to prevent this issue.

If the surrounding area is dusty or there is vegetation, outdoor condenser coils can also get very dirty. The condenser coil is clearly visible, so you can tell if debris is accumulating on its fins.

Reduce the amount of dirt and trash around the condenser. Dirt and debris may come from your lawnmower, dryer vents, or falling leaves. To ensure proper airflow around the condenser, clean the vicinity, clear away any garbage, and cut back any vegetation by at least 2 feet (0.6 meters).

Coil Fins

Because they are easily bent, the aluminium fins on the evaporator and condenser coils can obstruct airflow. A device known as a “fin comb” that will restore these fins to almost their original state is available from air conditioning wholesalers.

Drains for Condensate

Occasionally run a stiff wire through the drain channels of the appliance. A unit cannot reduce humidity if the drain channels are clogged, and the extra moisture that results could stain the carpet or walls.

Window seals for air conditioners in rooms

At the beginning of each cooling season, check the seal to make sure the metal case of the air conditioner is in touch with it. Cool air can leak out of your home if moisture damages this barrier.

Winter preparations

Cover your room air conditioner during the winter or take it out and store it. An outdoor unit of a central air conditioner can be shielded from debris and cold weather by being covered.
